“Traveling Tuesday” Goes to Keowee Key
The day was steamy hot and so was the breeze that swept through campus as the children climbed into their buses for their “Traveling Tuesday” Summer Program outing. Forty lucky children were headed to the Keowee Key to attend the annual swim party that is held for them at the community pool.
Over the last several years, Mrs. Ellen Stumpf, a Keowee Key resident and Walhalla DAR member had been the key coordinator of this annual summer event for the students. With Mrs. Stumpf’s passing, her fellow Walhalla Chapter members hosted this year’s water party in her memory. Mary Ann Prater, Regent of the Walhalla DAR Chapter said, “This annual swim party was started by Ellen Stumpf to provide the Tamassee DAR School children with the opportunity to learn to swim and to enjoy the water. We decided that this year we would continue this summer time event in her memory.”
As the children enjoyed cooling off in the crystal blue pool, several DAR members assisted them as they explored their ability to float and swim. Throughout the afternoon, several of the children grinned from ear to ear and proudly exclaimed, “I did it!” for which everyone clapped and cheered.
After a couple of hours cooling off in the pool, the aroma of sizzling hot pizzas filled the air. The toppings on the pizzas were as varied as the many hungry children who anxiously awaited the call to dinner. Once the blessing was given, which included a memorial tribute to Mrs. Stumpf the dinner was served. The pizzas were provided again this year by Mr. Dave Shugart of Pizza Buffet in Seneca who said, “I am blessed with a successful small business and I enjoy giving back to the community.” The sodas and fresh fruit were donated by Ingles and the cookies and brownies were provided by members of the Walhalla Chapter.
A wonderful, warm and loving summer memory was made for each and every Tamassee DAR School child that afternoon and we are very appreciative of the time and resources contributed by every single person who made it happen.
