As a staff member at Tamassee DAR School it is a rewarding feeling to watch as new children transition over time and begin to blossom. As you can imagine upon arrival the children are often timid, frightened, withdrawn, reserved, and often angry. Very quickly, the gentleness of the campus environment encourages feelings of safety. The compassion shown by the staff demonstrates sincere concern for their well-being. The focus on education develops a desire to do well in school and the support offered creates success that increases their self-esteem. The opportunities to attend church and grow in their knowledge of God fosters their spiritual growth and sense of purpose. The friendships developed with other children that have faced similar life experiences help them feel less alone. These immediate influences begin the transition which continues on through such services as counseling and grief/loss sessions to guide the student through the resolution of deeper issues.
The transition is so smooth that it makes you wonder if even the child notices it. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, the students were asked to reflect on Tamassee DAR School and about the ways their lives have been impacted since their arrival.
Here are a few of their comments:
“Tamassee DAR School helped me better understand that responsibilities in life are not just a game. Tamassee DAR has changed me spiritually and emotionally. Being at Tamassee has brought me closer to God through guiding and praying for me. Also, Tamassee has taught me how to control my anger and how to dispose of my anger in many different ways. Being at Tamassee is a life changer.
“I have a nice stable environment to live in”
“I know so much more, thank God I am here”
“It has given me opportunities to learn about people and places and to better understand different types of people”
“It provided a place for me to live when I needed a home”
“The Teaching Parents help us with the good behavior I have”
“I am going to School”
“They told me to do a good job and I did”
“They gave me more opportunities than I had back home”
“I realized how much I need my siblings”
How rewarding it is to hear from the actual children of Tamassee DAR School that the dedication, love and support they receive is recognized and appreciated. Thank you to Staff, Friends of Tamassee, Individuals, DAR members and Organizations, Community Friends and Businesses for your role in successful transitions for our children.
