Taking Care of Stuff…

Mar. 25, 2019

During a recent conversation with a few of the residential children who call Tamassee DAR School their home, we asked, “What do you like about Tamassee?”

As you can imagine, the younger children gave answers that you would ordinarily expect to hear such as, “I like the playground swings, the special holiday parties, being with my friends, etc….”  It was the response from one of the middle school students that touched our hearts and deepened our appreciation for being a part of this organization when he said, “My burdens are lifted off- I have adults I trust to take care of stuff.”

WOW…what a wonderful gift to give a child and what an equally wonderful realization that he provided to us.  We didn’t delve deeper into the specifics of the “stuff” that he was talking about, rather we soaked in his words and were grateful for the faith he had placed in us to take good care of him.  In just a short time, we went from strangers at Tamassee to a trusted friend.  What an honor.

Sometimes, children arrive at Tamassee from situations where they were shouldering responsibilities typically faced by adults.  Childhood memories of getting sweaty and dirty while running around outside with friends, or playing stickball games that last until the sun goes down, or summer adventures at the local swimming holes were replaced with worries about where to sleep or what to eat.  It is rewarding to know that Tamassee is able to help children have the opportunity to relax and be free to create those precious carefree childhood memories that as people, we cling to and fondly remember throughout our lives.   It allows the children to be children.

The response the student gave to the question lifted our hearts not only because we are providing this young man the opportunity to be young, but because he has developed a trust with us.  Having the ability to trust others is a characteristic that we work to develop in the students we serve. It was an honor to hear firsthand that we are achieving that goal and with confidence we can say that we will, on behalf of all the children at Tamassee, continue to work hard to lift those burdens and take care of stuff.
