The 2021-22 Afterschool Program is now in session at Tamassee DAR School. Last Monday was the first day of school, and we welcomed twenty-three elementary and middle school students from Tamassee-Salem, Walhalla, and Keowee elementary schools, as well as Walhalla Middle School. Some are returning students from last school year, others are children who attended our summer day camp program, and still more are brand new to our program. We are excited to serve so many community students and to have the opportunity to help them succeed in their education.
As enrollments began arriving, it quickly became apparent we would need to add an additional classroom and one more teacher to ensure the same academic improvements our students achieved last year. With our target of a 10:1 student to teacher ratio, hands-on and individual assistance with daily homework responsibilities can be extended to every student.
We are very fortunate to welcome back the tutors who dedicated a few hours each week to our students. Providing personal assistance with reading, spelling or math is a key component to the success our children achieved last year. The meaningful relationships the tutors and their students formed could be recognized each time waiting students excitedly greeted their arriving tutors. It was heartwarming to peek into the library and see the student and their tutor reading together or further discussing the topics they were studying. Equally amusing was watching them as they sounded out words using the phonics method and grinning at the various facial mechanics necessary to form those sounds! With 23 students already enrolled this year, we welcome adults of all ages who would like to join the afternoon fun. As James Dobson stated, “No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.” You pick the days and the hours that work best for you! We’ll provide the willing student! Please contact us at email@example.com if you are interested in joining our Tamassee family as an Afterschool tutor this year.
On Saturday, September 25, Tamassee DAR School will celebrate 103 years of service to children and families. You are invited to join us at 2 p.m. in the Gibson Chapel as we appreciate the dedication, vision and foresight, and support by our founders, the members of the South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and equally the members of our local community. During this time we will also publicly announce the new residential program we are rolling out in first quarter of 2022. Our beautiful campus will then be open for the community to learn more about all of our programs and services. The celebration will culminate with a complimentary dinner in our Banquet Hall. Registration forms are available at www.tdarschool.org/event/founders-day-beyond/. Please pre-register for the dinner by September 17, 2021.
Have a safe and successful school year!
