During the past 10 decades, the world has experienced many events which have shaped and molded societies, cultures, and governmental and political structures around the world. As we reflect on these historical happenings, it is with humble amazement that we realize, while all those things were occurring, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in the beautiful South Carolina upstate region, Tamassee DAR School continued to do what it does best–caring for children and families in need. As we prepare to turn 100 years old, we are busy making plans and preparations to provide a level of recognition and celebration that an accomplishment such as this truly deserves.
February 24th, 2019 will mark the 100th anniversary of the very first school session, which was held in the newly constructed South Carolina Cottage. It was a trail period attended by 23 local day students to ensure all would be ready for the fall session when the first set of boarding students arrived ready to begin their education. In February 2019, today’s Tamassee staff and students will recognize this milestone in the Ann Brown Banquet Hall with a special program and dinner celebration, including a centennially decorated cake.
On July 27, 2019, Tamassee will host a campus celebration for community friends, alumni, supporters and any other stakeholders who would like to attend. Activities will include a selection of bands with live music, children’s games, bounce houses, food, artisans, vendors, car show, and more. Mark your calendars and do not miss the fun!
Our annual Founders’ Day event will be held on October 15 and 16, 2019. At this time, we will celebrate our Founders, the Daughters of the American Revolution. These ladies had the vision and the determination to provide educational opportunities to those who had none, the courage and fortitude to accept the challenges they faced in this endeavor, and the continued dedication and support of the cause for 100 years.
We are also in the process of designing and creating commemorative merchandise, which will be available for purchase. All sales will benefit the Tamassee DAR School Children’s Fund and will help carry us into the next 100 years.
Never before published photographs and stories that date back to the founding of Tamassee DAR School are being gathered and submitted for the design of coffee table book. This pictorial history will cover major achievements by decade over the past 100 years.
Other items available for purchase will include a centennial collector plate bearing Tamassee’s official 100th anniversary logo, a custom brooch which honors our founders, staff, and the thousands of students who have passed through the gates, and a Tamassee DAR School scarf designed to reflect its rich history.
Don’t miss out! Watch for your opportunity to provide support for the future children of Tamassee DAR School by making purchases of any or all of these commemorative pieces during 2019.
