Full STEM Ahead

Feb. 4, 2022

STEM Education simply means educating students in four specific disciplines, namely, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

This generation of students is a “generation of technology”.  Even children as young as elementary school have eyes that light up when you talk about robots and the power to make them react on demand.  Today, students are becoming comfortable with a computer and keyboard at very young ages.  This interest is making it even more important to offer STEM in our Afterschool program.  STEM, and specifically Robotics, allows our students to grow in their knowledge of coding, programming, and computer science, while also participating in activities they really enjoy! Technology is everywhere, and without STEM, students are missing out on a vital piece of the future.

Afterschool programs have increasingly become the “go-to” for STEM enrichment as more schools cut funding or do not have the resources for STEM activities. Offering STEM in our program gives us the chance to support the needs and interests of students in our community, who might not otherwise be able to participate in these activities. It also allows us to provide a more robust STEM program over the summer months, when students are in our program for a longer amount of time.

Through a generous donation from Cliffs Residential Outreach (CRO) Fall-Springs Branch in Salem, South Carolina, the Tamassee Afterschool program has acquired additional and modern STEM equipment, which will invite every student in the program to experience hands-on STEM activities-from elementary school-aged children who marvel at the ability to direct cute little robots across the room to the more complicated projects for older students not only to code the robots, but also develop skills to build the physical structure using Legos-type materials.

As we continue to grow our afterschool program and make plans for our summer camp, we are pleased to meet the needs of modern education by offering STEM to the students we serve.

Valentines Day is coming, when our thoughts turn to spring engagements and summer weddings.  Don’t miss our 2nd annual Weddings at Tamassee Open House.   This year the event is scheduled for Saturday, April 9th and will provide happy couples the opportunity to tour our outdoor and indoor wedding venues, along with reception areas.   Preferred vendors will be on site to answer questions and provide samples of their services.   Bring your cameras and take your engagement photos on our beautiful springtime campus.   Please call 864.944.1390 to confirm your attendance.

Plans are also underway for our 2nd community rummage sale.  Join us on Saturday, April 23rd from 8 a.m. – noon.   Sales spaces can be purchased for $5 by calling 864.944.1390.  Bring your own table or rent from us for $5 on a first come, first served basis.   If you are a weekend treasure hunter, you will not want to miss the deals and steals that will be available.  See you then!
