Each weekday afternoon at approximately 2:30 p.m. the Afterschool students begin arriving on Tamassee DAR School campus. Some are coming from community elementary and middle schools while others arrive from homeschool environments looking for social interaction with fellow students. Regardless, all anxiously scoot into the banquet hall for their healthy afternoon snack and to talk about their school day highlights with each other and the afterschool staff.
Immediately following the refreshment, time is set aside for outdoor physical activity. The students typically pair off in a game of basketball, while the rest run to the swings and slide for playground fun. On the days that the weather hampers outdoor enjoyment, exercise is moved indoors to the gymnasium. Either way, it’s refreshing to hear the sounds of their excitement and laughter throughout campus. The excess energy being burned will provide the opportunity for better focus when study time begins. As the students arrive in the educational building they scurry to their classrooms where the current day’s homework assignments are completed under the helpful eye of our Afterschool teachers. Those who have been identified as needing extra focus on reading or math attend their individualized tutoring sessions. This additional learning opportunity is provided by community volunteers. Some are former teachers and some not. The common motivation among our volunteers seems to be that a good education will open doors and provide opportunities to students as they grow into adulthood. These community heros are investing their time to help a child grow academically with the understanding that they are also promoting a well-educated society, and building the future leaders of our great nation. If you have some extra time and would like to make a difference in your community and the children who call it home, please contact us at 864.944.1390.
Following study time comes a daily rotating schedule of programs and activities designed to develop good citizenship traits, explore self-interests through enrichment programs, contribute to healthy life styles with wellness classes, or participate in off-campus field trips.
At the end of their workday, weary parents and caregivers stop by to pick up their students with the opportunity to relax and enjoy their evening family time together.
Understanding that many working parents struggle with E-Learning day instruction and child care requirements, Tamassee has added full day classes on these designated school days. We provide a safe learning environment with staff to assist students in completing e-learning assignments along with access to a reliable internet connection. You do not need to be enrolled in the regular Afterschool program to participate in E-Learning Full Day classes. Watch our website at www.tdarschool.org for dates these classes are offered and the registration cut-offs. We look forward to partnering with you to provide the best educational opportunities for your student.
